Sip of Memories: Infused Dried Fruit Tea Workshop

Art & Science Exhibition Series
Contaminations: Towards a Science Gallery

Looking back at the history of science, the discovery of the antibiotic penicillin was, in fact, the result of an experimental contamination.

When we speak of contamination, we may think of plastic micro-particles, viruses, or space debris. At the same time, contamination also signifies a disturbance of boundaries, or the infiltration, staining, and hybridization between two entities. Such interactions may appear negative, yet they also represent opportunities for transformation. Art & Science Collaboration functions in a similar way: seemingly disruptive to each other’s methodologies, yet capable of merging into entirely new possibilities.

This exhibition is divided into two main sections. On the first floor of the NYCU Gallery, visitors will encounter the diversity of Art & Science Collaboration within international academic and research institutions, offering an introduction to the hybrid exhibition model of the “Science Art Exhibition,” which carries both artistic and scientific value. The second floor focuses on the theme of “Contamination.” Alongside international contemporary artworks from Europe and Southeast Asia that engage with the notion of contamination, the exhibition also presents collaborative outcomes from courses and research projects at NYCU’s Institute of Applied Arts, School of Dentistry, and Institute of Science, Technology and Society.

In Taiwan today, collaborations between art and science remain relatively rare. Do we truly need such an exhibition model? If so, what strategies should we adopt to build sustainable systems and foster international exchange? This exhibition invites audiences to reflect, to question, and to spark new dialogues together.

Poetics and Visual Realms—Huang Kuang-nan: A New Vision of Literati Ink Painting

Poetics and Visual Realms—Huang Kuang-nan: A New Vision of Literati Ink Painting takes the shared origin of poetry and painting as its core, presenting ink paintings in which the artist integrates scholarly reflection, lived experience, and contemporary visual vocabulary. Taking ink as foundation and rhythm, Huang transforms poetics into pictorial cadence and mental imagery, allowing landscape to move beyond the reproduction of nature and become a field of spirit and emotion. His works reconcile the introspective restraint of traditional literati painting with the openness of contemporary abstraction. At the intersection of inner vision and a cosmic perspective, the exhibition expands the contemporary possibilities of ink painting, shaping a poetic realm that can be felt, read, and deeply contemplated.

Before Future: Becoming Otherwise

Architecture is often in a race against time. By the time a building is realised, the context in which it was conceived has often evolved. This delay makes architecture an act of anticipation — an experiment in building for a future that is not yet here. Echoing Han Pao-Teh, who viewed architects as creators destined to "The second type of architect is committed to creation; they are artists by nature. To create is to change the existing order." We see creation not just as stylistic innovation, but as a critical response to the rhythm of our times. In a rapidly changing world, architecture cannot be static; it must be an active, ongoing experiment to remain relevant and to serve as a lens for understanding what comes next.

However, Before Future is not about prediction. It is about the power of the present and the potential of "Becoming Otherwise." Rather than rigidly defining a future, we embrace a flexible, resilient approach to design — one that expands our boundaries and challenges our assumptions. Tackling issues from urban living and ecology to education and perception, material and corporeal, the designs displayed here are constantly adapting, allowing new questions and relationships to take shape.

The exhibition, Before Future: Becoming Otherwise explores this through five key dimensions: Temporal Resonance Otherwise, Landscape Construction Otherwise, Dwelling Coexistence Otherwise, Consciousness Unfolding Otherwise, and Material Operation Otherwise — all viewed through the lens of the "Otherwise." These trajectories are not discrete categories but a dynamic field of reciprocal movement and generative exchange — a force field of continual becoming. The works presented span collective housing, urban regeneration, parent–child environments, and interactive spatial installations. Each project serves as a response to Before Future — an experimental gesture probing alternative forms of existence. We invite you to enter the Before Future and glimpse the possibilities of what comes ahead, by imaginations and questions, the futures unfold.

Wave Wave: 2025 Group Exhibition by Institute of Applied Arts, NYCU

In the quiet folds of daily life, waves form – small, barely felt, yet profoundly shaping.

A Wait, an Ache, a Voice, an Echo

a Whisper, an Absence, a Void, an Elapse spreads out ripples.

This exhibition listens to the Subtle, the Slow, the Soft, and the Serenity and traces how creation begins not with noise but with Resonance— a Response to what Remains, Recedes, or gently Returns.

Each work is a fragment of a silent encounter woven into a polyphony of shared vibrations.

Not Loud, but Lasting. Not Lasting, but Loud.

Wave Wave is where sensation begins—and perhaps, begins again.

jyunhanlu

Brilliant Theatricality: Jyun-Han LU Solo Exhibition

Each painting is a stage, and we are its actors and playwrights.

Jyun-Han LU's creations are neither strictly realistic nor entirely fictional. They emerge from moments of quiet contemplation when he observes the landscape with sensitivity— feeling the wind's caress, listening to the stories whispered by rain. Through this deep engagement with nature and his boundless imagination, he reconstructs inner emotional rhythms: the shifting light and shadows of the mountains become vibrant colors; the undulations of waves transform into textured brushstrokes. These elements interweave into a layered, rhythmic, and lingering visual experience. The brilliance of his work lies in the unresolved narratives, the viewer's awareness, and the ineffable thrill of the viewing moment.

Even the same landscape can evoke different emotions depending on the weather, the time of day, or the people encountered. Jyun-Han LU observes each passerby's expressions and emotional currents, translating these subtle shifts into varying blocks of color. Faces bear expressions, expressions carry intent, and intent forms the composition's core. Once intent arises, the story unfolds. In this ever-changing emotional landscape, Jyun-Han LU orchestrates a brilliant theatrical feast.

Pinilimayan

Yang Mu-Ren : A Solo Exhibition of Paintings

For over a decade, Puyuma artist Yang Muren has used his brush to document the culture and lived memories of the “Stone-Born” subgroup to which he belongs. Through delicate lines and vivid colors, he transforms tribal legends, ceremonial rituals, everyday scenes, and the faces of his people into a visual chronicle from a contemporary Indigenous perspective. The exhibition title Pinilimayan comes from the Puyuma language, meaning “handmade,” symbolizing the cultural transmission carried forth by the hands of the creator.

Yang draws inspiration from his lived experiences and cultural observations since the 1980s. The Stone-Born Puyuma community is rich in visual aesthetics, which has provided fertile ground for Yang to merge modernist artistic sensibilities with tribal stylistic elements. This exhibition marks one of his first solo shows outside Taiwan’s eastern region and represents a significant stop in his touring project. It offers audiences across different regions a chance to engage with the distinctive aesthetics and spiritual values of Puyuma culture, while also encouraging greater awareness of the contemporary expressions and future development of Indigenous languages, cultures, and ways of life.

Not So Distant

The 2025 exhibition "Not So Distant" by the Graduate Institute of Architecture at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University adopts a macro perspective to explore the micro-connections between architectural works, redefining their relationship with the broader context. Each work is viewed as a node, linked through keywords, concepts, and design approaches to weave a dynamic design network. This approach reveals the seemingly independent yet deeply interconnected nature of architectural works, highlighting their mutual connection. Through our interactive website, viewers can actively select and navigate the conceptual and semantic connections between works. This experience transcends the original boundaries of physical exhibitions, fostering deeper dialogue with designers and viewers while sparking new ways of engaging with the exhibition.

The Treasures of Prosperity – Murals of Tang Dynasty

The Treasures of Prosperity – Murals of Tang Dynasty

The Tang dynasty ( 618–907 CE ), a golden age of prosperity, blended the traditions of the Qin and Han dynasties with Eastern and Western cultures. Mural painting flourished during this period, vividly capturing the vibrant lives of the Tang people.

Thanks to mid-20th-century archaeological and conservation efforts in Shaanxi, these murals have been preserved, offering a glimpse into Tang society and the timeless spirit of youth—an era of ambition, self-discovery, and energy. This exhibition invites you to explore the youthful vibrancy of the Tang dynasty and witness the efforts to give ancient murals a new lease of life, bridging the past and present.

The Sixth Fuel Factory Documenta 2025 :
Tracing the Origin of the Sixth Fuel Factory along the Touqian River

With the theme of “Tracing the Origin of the Sixth Fuel Factory along the Touqian River,” the Sixth Fuel Factory Documenta 2025 is dedicated to the preservation, revitalization, and regeneration of the Sixth Fuel Factory by revisiting, understanding, and constructing it as a cultural asset within the dynamic network interlaced by the factory’s history and ecology.

The documenta further addresses the question as to how the water of the Touqian River which has flowed for 300 years, and the memories of the three wars that have spanned 70 years, can become an imagined community of the multitude. The Touqian River and the Sixth Fuel Factory, Hsinchu Branch form a double helix that not only embodies the factory’s sui generis cultural ecology but also encompasses the historical memories and life trajectories of diverse ethnic groups for generations as well as the topography of the Touqian River in different periods of time.

The migration routes proposed in this documenta can be regarded as a dynamic process in which natural evolution is intertwined with human civilization. Through walking tours, graphic-and-text creation, video recordings, data processing, and essay writing, this documenta reveals the hybrid modalities of interdependence and conflict among people, places, history, memories, species, and ecology. In this documenta, the double helix of ecology and culture, as a continuum, will be interpreted interactively as it moves forward.
