《玉簪記》是明代劇作家高濂的作品，故事內容描述落難千金陳嬌蓮為了逃難流落金陵，入女貞觀為道姑，取法名妙常。書生潘必正臨安應試落第，羞於回家，寄居其姑母主持之女貞觀攻讀，與妙常相識，萌發了愛慕之心。兩人相戀終被觀主察覺，乃促必正離觀，再次赴試，並親送至江邊，令其立即登船啟程。妙常獲悉，急雇一葉小舟，追至江心，與必正互贈玉簪扇墜為信物，揮淚話別。嗣後，潘必正進士及第，迎娶妙常同返故里，才知父母早年為其訂親之嬌蓮，即意中人妙常，妙常亦與母重逢，閤家團圓。

The Story of the Jade Hairpin is a work by the playwright Gao Lian of the Ming Dynasty. The story describes Chen Miao-Chang, who fled to Jinling to escape. The scholar Pan Bizheng failed the exam and was ashamed to go home. He stayed at the Taoist Temple hosted by his aunt, got acquainted with Chen, and developed a love story. His aunt noticed the two fell in love, so she urged him to leave for the trial at once. She sent him to the river, let him immediately board the ship, and set off. Miao-Chang hired a small boat to chase and then exchanged a jade hairpin with Pan’s fan, farewell with tears.

Afterward, Pan advanced to the ranks, married Jiao-Lian, and returned to his hometown, realizing that Jiao-Lian, whom his parents betrothed in the early years, was the girl with whom he fell in love. Miao-Chang also reunited with her mother and her family.
