Before Future: Becoming Otherwise

Architecture is often in a race against time. By the time a building is realised, the context in which it was conceived has often evolved. This delay makes architecture an act of anticipation — an experiment in building for a future that is not yet here. Echoing Han Pao-Teh, who viewed architects as creators destined to "The second type of architect is committed to creation; they are artists by nature. To create is to change the existing order." We see creation not just as stylistic innovation, but as a critical response to the rhythm of our times. In a rapidly changing world, architecture cannot be static; it must be an active, ongoing experiment to remain relevant and to serve as a lens for understanding what comes next.

However, Before Future is not about prediction. It is about the power of the present and the potential of "Becoming Otherwise." Rather than rigidly defining a future, we embrace a flexible, resilient approach to design — one that expands our boundaries and challenges our assumptions. Tackling issues from urban living and ecology to education and perception, material and corporeal, the designs displayed here are constantly adapting, allowing new questions and relationships to take shape.

The exhibition, Before Future: Becoming Otherwise explores this through five key dimensions: Temporal Resonance Otherwise, Landscape Construction Otherwise, Dwelling Coexistence Otherwise, Consciousness Unfolding Otherwise, and Material Operation Otherwise — all viewed through the lens of the "Otherwise." These trajectories are not discrete categories but a dynamic field of reciprocal movement and generative exchange — a force field of continual becoming. The works presented span collective housing, urban regeneration, parent–child environments, and interactive spatial installations. Each project serves as a response to Before Future — an experimental gesture probing alternative forms of existence. We invite you to enter the Before Future and glimpse the possibilities of what comes ahead, by imaginations and questions, the futures unfold.

李斯特,是十九世紀浪漫主義的先驅與幻想者;
利蓋蒂,是二十世紀的聲響探索者與結構思維的革新者;

Transformed Traditions - The Piano Language of Liszt, Ligeti, and Kurtág

Piano/Yin Chiang

This program brings together three composers who, across generations, have shaped the very conception of the piano — Franz Liszt, György Ligeti, and György Kurtág.

Each represents an era in which the expressive and technical language of the instrument was reinvented:
Liszt, a romantic visionary of the 19th century;
Ligeti, a 20th-century explorer of sound and structure;
and Kurtág, to this day, as a master of reduction.

What unites them is a profound awareness of sound — as a vessel of memory, a trace of motion, and a gesture of human expression.

▌PROGRAM

Franz Liszt (1811–1886):  Csárdás No. 1, Csárdás obstiné
György Kurtág (1926– ): Selections from Játékok (Games)
György Ligeti (1923–2006): Musica ricercata

A Journey Through Time: Exploring Hsinchu’s Immigration History

Six Waves of Migration × Hsinchu Grand Tour

Hsinchu’s history is a rich tapestry woven by generations of immigrants. From the indigenous Taokas and Atayal peoples to early Han settlers (Hokkien and Hakka), Japanese colonial-era urban planners, post-war mainland Chinese migrants, and the influence of U.S. military presence—each era has left its mark. More recently, the city has been shaped by a wave of new immigrants from across Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and beyond, driven by technological advancements.

Another side of Hsinchu tells a story woven from war, migration, and the pursuit of belonging. After the war, large numbers of military dependents moved in, and neighborhoods filled with military, civil service, and police housing rapidly took shape. At its peak, Hsinchu City had as many as 47 officially registered military dependents’ villages. These villages were not merely residential spaces—they are living archives of history, witnessing the tides of an era and preserving the collective memories of generations of comrades in fate.

In this fourth installment of the series, we will explore Hsinchu’s dense clusters of military villages and wartime relics—from the  Liu-Ran Big Chimney ”  that transformed into a residential community, to landmarks like the Great Chimney, the Widows’ BuildingJiangong Elementary School (formerly an Army dependents’ school), the Chiang Kai-shek ShrineJianmei Road (once a U.S. military village), General Village, and Ligong New Village.

how Hsinchu evolved from a migrant city into a key node in the global technology landscape.
We invite you to join us on this Science City journey and step into the era shaped by NCTU alumni.

📌 Sixth Wave: Emerging Community Hukou United as One Family

Ethnic Groups: Hakka, Mainlanders, Southeast Asian Communities
Date & Time: April 19, 2026 (Sunday) 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

Having walked through the development of the old city and the expansion of Hakka settlements, through stories of protection and displacement, integration and transformation—
Hsinchu’s story has always continued through time.

Now, in the sixth wave, we step into the present.

In Hukou Old Street, between red bricks and arcades,
the everyday lives of Hakka and mainlander communities intertwine.
These are traces left by migrants of different eras,
and also a shared landscape of daily coexistence.

In Fenghuang Village, another story is unfolding.
“New residents” from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines
bring with them their languages, cuisines, and cultures,
infusing Hsinchu with new rhythms and flavors.
They come for work, settle into life, and gradually carve out their place in this city.

In this wave, we turn our attention to the flows of the present—witnessing cultures meeting again and being rewoven, and seeing how “a community of diverse cultures” is taking shape as part of everyday life.

📍 Step into Hukou
📍 Step into Fenghuang Village
📍 Step into a city still in the making

Together, let’s witness the next chapter of Hsinchu’s story.

Wave Wave: 2025 Group Exhibition by Institute of Applied Arts, NYCU

In the quiet folds of daily life, waves form – small, barely felt, yet profoundly shaping.

A Wait, an Ache, a Voice, an Echo

a Whisper, an Absence, a Void, an Elapse spreads out ripples.

This exhibition listens to the Subtle, the Slow, the Soft, and the Serenity and traces how creation begins not with noise but with Resonance— a Response to what Remains, Recedes, or gently Returns.

Each work is a fragment of a silent encounter woven into a polyphony of shared vibrations.

Not Loud, but Lasting. Not Lasting, but Loud.

Wave Wave is where sensation begins—and perhaps, begins again.

jyunhanlu

Brilliant Theatricality: Jyun-Han LU Solo Exhibition

Each painting is a stage, and we are its actors and playwrights.

Jyun-Han LU's creations are neither strictly realistic nor entirely fictional. They emerge from moments of quiet contemplation when he observes the landscape with sensitivity— feeling the wind's caress, listening to the stories whispered by rain. Through this deep engagement with nature and his boundless imagination, he reconstructs inner emotional rhythms: the shifting light and shadows of the mountains become vibrant colors; the undulations of waves transform into textured brushstrokes. These elements interweave into a layered, rhythmic, and lingering visual experience. The brilliance of his work lies in the unresolved narratives, the viewer's awareness, and the ineffable thrill of the viewing moment.

Even the same landscape can evoke different emotions depending on the weather, the time of day, or the people encountered. Jyun-Han LU observes each passerby's expressions and emotional currents, translating these subtle shifts into varying blocks of color. Faces bear expressions, expressions carry intent, and intent forms the composition's core. Once intent arises, the story unfolds. In this ever-changing emotional landscape, Jyun-Han LU orchestrates a brilliant theatrical feast.

Pinilimayan

Yang Mu-Ren : A Solo Exhibition of Paintings

For over a decade, Puyuma artist Yang Muren has used his brush to document the culture and lived memories of the “Stone-Born” subgroup to which he belongs. Through delicate lines and vivid colors, he transforms tribal legends, ceremonial rituals, everyday scenes, and the faces of his people into a visual chronicle from a contemporary Indigenous perspective.

The exhibition title Pinilimayan comes from the Puyuma language, meaning “handmade,” symbolizing the cultural transmission carried forth by the hands of the creator.

Yang draws inspiration from his lived experiences and cultural observations since the 1980s. The Stone-Born Puyuma community is rich in visual aesthetics, which has provided fertile ground for Yang to merge modernist artistic sensibilities with tribal stylistic elements.

This exhibition marks one of his first solo shows outside Taiwan’s eastern region and represents a significant stop in his touring project. It offers audiences across different regions a chance to engage with the distinctive aesthetics and spiritual values of Puyuma culture, while also encouraging greater awareness of the contemporary expressions and future development of Indigenous languages, cultures, and ways of life.

A Play Reading of White Storyteller by The Party Theater Group

Date & Time: 2025/10/08 (Wed.) 19:30
Venue: NYCU Music Performance Hall (Guangfu Campus), 2nd Floor, Student Activity Center
Ticket: Free admission

Written by Golden Bell winner Zan Jae, produced by The Party Theater Group, and first performed at Taipei’s Experimental Theater in October 2017, White Storyteller deftly employs magical realism to explore the dysfunction and expose the lie at the heart of a family touched and tainted by Taiwan’s bloody White Terror.

Using the main character’s boyhood recollections of traditional Chinese glove puppet theater as an interpretive lens, the play utilizes puppet performance in unique, innovative ways to bring to life the story’s history, people, and conflicts.

In this way, White Storyteller resurrects the memories and lays bare the betrayals of the White Terror, and explores the repercussions of a bloodstained past upon an antiseptic present to transform the bitterness borne of tragedy into forgiveness.

POHAN Huang

POHAN: Beyond Magic & Mystery

"Magic, Mind, and Mystery — A Journey Through the Realm of Truth and Illusion."

This is not just a magic show — it is a journey that challenges the boundaries of perception, reality, and imagination. POHAN seamlessly blends masterful sleight of hand with delicate mentalism to deliver an extraordinary interactive experience. No exaggerated special effects or flashy props — only pure skill and the refined art of deception that stirs the senses and unlocks the imagination.

Ordinary objects transform into wonders at the magician’s fingertips, right before your eyes. When thoughts are read and choices predicted, what seems like chance is carefully orchestrated all along. As cards move, the boundary between reality and illusion quietly dissolves. What you see may not be real. What you believe may be questioned. And in that fleeting moment of doubt, the miracle has already happened.

Step beyond the known and join POHAN for an unforgettable encounter with magic, mystery, and the hidden wonders of the mind —a show for all ages that invites you to experience the impossible.
